Hey you! Yes, you. The one whose first makeup purchase was black nail polish and who took great pride in being in the goth crowd in high school. We’ve got pretty big news for you: Goth is back, baby! That’s right, goth-inspired fashion is having quite the moment right now, and you might not have even realized it because of how subtly it can be incorporated into an ensemble.
According to stylist Leena Alsulaiman, goth style is making a comeback in today’s post-pandemic world, channeling unexpressed dark emotions brought on by a global crisis.
“Goth fashion in 2022,” Alsulaiman says, “still has strong black-on-black essence and a mixture of all the dark and spooky elements of traditional gothic style, but with an added emphasis on sex appeal and a few pops of deep colors like blood-red and graphite silver.”
Of course, it should come as no surprise that a style that was popular (at least among a certain crowd) when you were in school is having a resurgence today since everything from Y2K fashions like the Juicy tracksuit to platform sneakers are back in major trending rotation.
What Is Goth?
So what exactly is goth style? While “goth” is typically associated with lots of black and people with an “alternative” edge, remember there is a difference between goth and emo. Goth could also be considered “vampire chic.” Think: Would the cast of “What We Do in the Shadows” wear it? If yes, then that’s goth.
“Goth means lots of black, but in this new version, we can incorporate skin-exposing cutouts and contrasting fabrics and textures like ruffles, velvet, silk, lace, and leather,” explains Alsulaiman.
How Can You Wear Goth Today?
“I still love that goth vibe, but I’m an adult in suburbia with an office job.” Sound like you? The good news is you can still very easily evoke that goth vibe with your wardrobe by incorporating certain pieces into your day-to-day style.
“The key to this new goth is in how you mix it into your wardrobe,” says Alsulaiman. “My choices for staple goth pieces are leather corset-style belts, leather moto jackets, oversized cargo pants, and combat boots.”
So the next time that little voice inside your head tells you adults can’t be goth, the silence that negativity and go flaunt your grown-up goth style. We’ve compiled a list of super wearable modern goth pieces for both men and women to help you achieve the look.
